Democracy

The parish councillors (particularly Cllr Ross) are often heard to denigrate the Heritage Foundation as a non-democratically appointed governance for Letchworth. The councillors claim that their democratically mandated council should take over that governance.

Well, it is worth taking a step back to look at the actual state of democracy in Letchworth.

The parish council have 24 councillors, of whom only 18 were actually elected (the other six having been undemocratically co-opted).

These 24 current councillors achieved a combined total of 9419 electoral votes.

Compare this with the 6 elected Heritage Foundation governers who achieved 12930 electoral votes.

So there you have it. The parish council is less democratic and has a smaller mandate than the Heritage Foundation.

Please use your democratic right in May 2009 to inform the Parish Council what democracy really means when all 24 positions are up for re-election: HELP will be fielding 24 candidates with the aim of abolishing the Parish Council from within.
